Dr. George Macones completed his residency at Pennsylvania Hospital, followed by his fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University. He spent 10 years on the faculty at the University of Pennsylvania, eventually serving as Chief of the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine. Dr. Macones moved to become Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Washington University in St Louis in 2005.

Dr. Macones has a strong academic record with research in obstetrics, especially with regards to preterm birth and general obstetrical issues such as vaginal birth after cesarean. His CV currently lists over 400 peer reviewed publications. He has held research grants from NICHD, NCI, and NHLBI in the past. He is currently the Director of the March of Dimes Prematurity Research Center at Washington University in St Louis.

Dr. Macones is a national leader in obstetrics. He has led a number of major committees for ACOG, including serving as Chair of the Committee on Obstetric Practice several years ago. He currently serves as Chair of the Steering Committee for the Maternal Fetal Medicine Units network and on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
